Ebony has a long and eventful history of use in various segments of the wood processing industry. At present, ebony is mostly used in manufacturing compact products and small components as opposed to its use in furniture production in the past. The heartwood of ebony is jet black color with occasional grey and dark brown stripes. Ebony has a uniform texture and straight or slightly irregular grain. It can be polished to a high gloss. Ebony is a very stable and bend resistant material that is prized for the accurate reproduction of individual tones. Furch Guitars uses ebony for making bridges, fingerboards, and headstock overlay on all models of acoustic and acoustic-electric bass guitars.
